Why Mannequins Freak Us Out
Still Life
Objective - It’s estimated that about 12% of adults in the US are afraid of mannequins. These eerie, lifeless figures often pop up in pop culture and media, designed to evoke feelings of dread or unease. But why do these seemingly innocent store displays leave so many people feeling creeped out?
Approach - Still Life is about why something so mundane is often so creepy. It dives into the interesting history of mannequins, their evolution over time, their use in pop culture, and why they can be so unsettling.
Execution - This project involved an interesting research dive into the history of mannequins, from journal articles to Reddit posts. The art direction used in the publication is based on this research to make the mannequin parts come alive, drawing from common fears. Mannequin arms interact with type, mannequin heads poke through windows in pages, and pages take mannequin form.
